Hi there,

I'm emailing from Queen Mary University of London. As of about half past nine this evening we started an occupation in solidarity of Gaza. Any support, advice, recommendations would be much appreciated. Here is a link to our blog http://queenmaryoccupation.blogspot.com/

Many thanks.

  1. Hey, we just saw a great interview with Stephen Hawking on Gaza (and physics!) on Al Jazeera. Really good politics! Any chance of getting his support?

  3. I wrote a piece on using social media to get your message across. That might be of help to you.

Which is, of course, a lie.

  5. I would like to post the first comment to say bloody well done to these students.

the first thing to remember is that no matter how it may seem you have the support of the majority and those who spend hours attacking you on blogs are, for the most part, cowards who hide their fear behind sophisrty.

remember that being right does not alway mean having most people agreeing with you, but regardless most people outside the university structure support your actions.

make sure the uni knows how's boss. present them with two options when they ask you to leave:
1.) enter in to negotiations and fulfill our demands
    or
2.) have us arrested and physically ejected from the occupation and see how it looks when a uni calls the mob squad in on a peaceful protest who demanded little more than the university's contribution to the humanitarian effort in gaza.

I apollogise for any spelling/ grammar mistakes

And Alec ( sorry Mr. Macpherson as we have not been introduced), simply saying something is a lie proves nothing.

and another good question to you is this: you spend a lot of time attacking the demonstrators attempting to get aid for the people of gaza, what are you doing to help? go and have a think if you could be spending your time better.
and before you throw the same comment back at me I've just finished a 6-2 shift and have been collecting signatures and contributions.

I say, old bean, what bizarre logic! Does this mean if I stated you deep-fry kittens, and you called it a lie, my original claim would still stand?

    >> you spend a lot of time attacking the demonstrators attempting to get aid for the people of gaza, what are you doing to help? go and have a think if you could be spending your time better.

Even more bizarre. You construct your own elaborate figures of what Internet commenters represent, and then demand that they 'prove' something or other in order for you to accept them. Dream on, Mr. McCarthy!

  8. Oh dear.

I'm afraid most people do not support you, with more blaming Hamas than the IDF.

  10. Thanks for the link about Starbucks.
Personally, it wouldn't matter to me if they did fund the idf, as I don't think boycott is the way to go. The reason I won't go to starbucks because the coffee is rubbish and it's over priced.
I don't want to get in to a debate about epistemology, I was just pointing out that if you really wanted your point to hit home among people who may not take you word as gospel you should have provided some proof.
    Anyway,
To be called old bean by someone I assume is a grad is just a bit too much. I don't know how it is with students but I try to be as civil as I can.
And to chrisc: oh dear, I think you've missed the point old bean. I will agree that of those polled more blamed Hamas "for the conflict" than the IDF. So what? I think that Hamas may have prompted this latest bloody conflict. I am no friend of Hamas or any Islamists.
Are the people of this poll really saying that they blame Hamas for the schools the IDF attacked and the civilians the IDF killed? Even if they were, this was not the support I was talking about.
Can you throw up another link proving that most people are opposed to sending humanitarian aid to Gaza? Or one that says people are against Cambridge university digging deep in its pockets to help those less fortunate?
Oh dear, and "showing the university who's boss"? as far as I was aware one of the most well known and most powerful universities in the world had been unable to get rid of a few protesters who are currently living in one of it's buildings, letting in whoever they see fit and bringing in supplies despite the university telling them they can't. Who seems to be in control here Mr. Student?
    Oh dear...

  11. >> I think that Hamas may have prompted this latest bloody conflict.

A rational mind would see this as, if not vindication of the Israeli response, then certainly suggestive that Hamas is a liability.

    >> I am no friend of Hamas or any Islamists.

Of course you are, in that you "support it as the democratically elected government of Gaza". Even then, it remains a gedankenexperiment to you, where Israelis and Palestinians suffer the misfortunes whilst you imagine yourself as directing world-policy from the safety of British streets and protesting in a warm university faculty.

Queen Mary - don't pay any attention to auld Harry Pollitt. It's a Stalinist abomination which somehow stumbles on. But well done ChrisC for revealing yourself.

Suggest making contact with Sussex who have successfully got the uni to agree to fund 6 scholarships for Palestinian students. So I heard from one of the occupiers at any rate. Congrats to Sussex. Good luck Queen Mary - and may Gaza be stamped on *your* heart!
